Get more judges appointed: Supreme Court junks plea for speedy disposal of election petitions

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) petition highlighting the delays by High Courts in deciding election petitions.
A Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and
Justices JB
Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said
that the fault is not with High Courts since they are overburdened with work
and there is shortage of judges.
"Get some more judges appointed to the High Court. You know
the burden on High Court judges. They are hearing Section 482 plea, transfers,
civil matters etc. Sorry," the CJI said.
Senior Advocate Dama Seshadri Naidu appeared for petitioner and
said that the matter is similar to another case pending before the top court
which has been filed by BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay.
However, the Supreme Court refused to entertain the plea and
dismissed the case.
Election petitions are petitions filed directly before High Courts
challenging election of candidates to parliament or State assemblies.
Such petitions affecting the root of democracy since they often
play a big role in deciding whether a government enjoys support in the house or
not.
But many a time, such petitions are decided after considerable
delays, often after the tenure of the government is over rendering such
petitions infructuous.
